Agricultural system is highly optimized for yield, efficiency, and cost, rather than health. While it is an engineering marvel that produces massive amounts of affordable food, this industrial model—often called "conventional agriculture"—has created systemic "unhealthy" consequences for both human populations and the environment.
Here is a breakdown of how the current system impacts health on multiple fronts.
Human Health: The Diet and Disease Link
The Cheap Calorie Epidemic: The U.S. system heavily subsidizes commodity crops like corn and soy. These are primarily used for animal feed and to manufacture the cheap, calorie-dense, ultra-processed foods that dominate grocery stores. This abundance of low-nutrient calories is a primary driver of the U.S. obesity epidemic and related chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Antibiotic Resistance: To prevent disease in crowded factory farms, livestock are often given low doses of antibiotics. This practice accelerates the mutation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can spread to humans through water, meat, and fertilizer, causing difficult-to-treat infections.
Chemical Exposure: The heavy use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides leaves residues on food and exposes agricultural workers to chemicals linked to severe health risks, including endocrine disruption and certain cancers.

Environmental Health: The Ecosystem Toll
Soil Degradation: Intensive tilling and monoculture farming (growing the exact same crop year after year) strip the soil of its organic matter. The U.S. is losing topsoil to wind and water erosion at an unsustainable average rate of 4.63 tons per acre per year.
Water Contamination: Runoff from synthetic fertilizers (which are rich in nitrogen and phosphorus) and manure from massive feedlots frequently pollutes local waterways. This creates toxic "dead zones" in bodies of water like the Gulf of Mexico and can contaminate drinking water supplies with nitrates.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The agricultural sector accounts for roughly 11% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. A massive portion of this comes from methane produced by cattle digestion (enteric fermentation), manure management, and nitrous oxide released from synthetic fertilizer application.
